« Go back to the kitchen »,« You are not in your place here ». Jennifer Lufau, like many gamers, has faced this type of sexist comment multiple times while playing network games. In addition to this misogyny, there are racist comments. " Especially when you play with a character with black skin or when the nickname you have chosen refers to a certain Africanness », Explains this passionate video games. It is in order not to remain alone in the face of this reality and to change mentalities in this environment that Jennifer Lufau creates the Afrogameuses association July 2020.

Raising awareness among video game players about inclusivity

« It all started with an Instagram account », Explains the one who started playing on the version of Prince of Persia from 1989 and who has never stopped playing since. Her initial ambition: to ensure that she is not alone in suffering racist and sexist insults. But the project quickly gained momentum and became an association in order to " make things happen, make the profiles of Afro-descendant women more visible and encourage vocations »In a sector that employs barely 20% of women.
Afrogameuses has thus identified 4 areas of work to reduce this discrimination: "To promote and create"role models“from diversity”, “encouraging professional integration in video games”, “working against toxicity towards minorities”, and “raising awareness among video game players about inclusivity”

But to improve diversity in this sector, Jennifer Lufau wants above all to encourage companies to take up the subject. " Speaking up on social media has helped us a lot to send the message to studios that the place and portrayal of black women in video games today is negative. ».
A fight that advances. " The studios want to do better and are asking for advice to improve the representativeness of all the diversities in video games. », Concludes the gamer.
