From March 12 to 28, the 23rd edition of Printemps des Poètes took place, an event that democratizes poetry through public readings and various events. Jean-Yves Reuzeau, co-founder of the publishing house Le Castor Astral, sheds light on today's poets.

« Poetry represents 1% of the book market in France. This may not seem like much, but it is nevertheless a booming sector. says Jean-Yves Reuzeau, co-founder and literary director of the publishing house Le Castor Astral. On the occasion of the end of the Printemps des Poètes, an event organized since 1999 in most French-speaking countries, we went to meet the publishing house Le Castor Astral to take stock of its 23rd edition, as well as an inventory of the poetry market in France.

What is your assessment of the Printemps des Poètes 2022?

Jean-Yves Reuzeau: The results are very positive. Beyond the events organized all over France, this is also due, for example, to the anthology that we publish each year with the Printemps des Poètes. For four years, this book has brought together a hundred French-speaking poets and, with each of its editions, it finds an increasingly large audience. This anthology presents itself as the balance sheet of the year in poetry. It brings together only living authors (with the exception of those who died during these twelve months), with a very large majority of unpublished texts.

The result is positive because the Printemps des Poètes was able to benefit from unprecedented media coverage compared to other years. La Grande Libraire (France 5's literary magazine) and Canal+ (Caracters program) have devoted entire programs to poetry. Abdellatif Laâbi was particularly noticed in the two programs, and his book Poetry is invincible has achieved astonishing success.

What is the weight of events like the Printemps des Poètes?

JYR: The impact of the actions of the Printemps des Poètes are significant and contribute to the democratization of poetry. This impact should not be overlooked. Booksellers are becoming increasingly aware that poetry books have a loyal and growing following. The numerous public readings organized make it possible to reach a readership that is sometimes unaccustomed to poetry.

Who are the poetry readers in 2022?

JYR: The amateur public of the genre seems to be getting younger in recent years. A new generation of poets is asserting itself, exposing themselves in public readings and communicating effectively on social networks. At Castor Astral, we accompany Cécile Coulon, a young novelist who is very popular on the networks, who has managed to sell 25 copies of her first collection. A phenomenon still rare in poetry, even if new female talents like Rim Battal, Mélanie Leblanc, Maud Joiret, or Sandra Lillo are meeting a growing audience.

How do we communicate about poetry today?

JYR: Most of our communication takes place on social networks. Either directly or through the authors and specialized sites. We also try to communicate in bookstores by helping to develop shelves dedicated to poetry. For about five years, this literary genre has found a new lease of life. It is also thanks to events such as the Printemps des Poètes and the Poetry Market (which attracts 50 people each June, Place Saint-Sulpice, in Paris) that readers can pay more and more attention to this art.
