Stylist, jeweller, rocker or even painter… Parisian artist Pierre Rioufol welcomed us to his apartment/workshop in the ninth arrondissement of Paris. For the French Touch, he returns to his artistic approach.

It is rue du Faubourg Montmartre, in Paris, in the heart of the ninth arrondissement, that Pierre Rioufol set up his studio. Jackets, paintings, jewellery, rugs, door handles… here everything is matched, and gives us the impression of wandering in the latter's head.

Turn jackets into paintings

Close to the French music scene, groups like La Femme or Papooz, it was first with his jackets that Pierre Rioufol became known. Representing landscapes made of flat colored leather, it is with the desire to transform the jackets into real paintings that the designer defined his style. “At the time, I even had fun transposing the designs of my jackets onto canvas,” he recalls. “One of the oldest I've done is this natural leather jacket that I tattooed by hand. It's the one Lana Del Rey wore for Nylon (lifestyle magazine, editor's note), it's sheepskin, so it 'tans' in the sun,” the designer tells us. Today, his jackets have made a place for themselves in the sun to such an extent that they can be found on Matthieu Chédid's last two tours “L'être infini” and “Rêvalité”.

Rings made in the 9th arrondissement

"Jewelry is plumbing on a small scale," laughs the Parisian who has made jewelry his main activity. Representing stylized robot heads, her rings quickly stood out for their uniqueness. Using amethysts, garnets or citrines, Pierre Rioufol combines colors to “give different skills to his creations”. Its collections are made in an ultra-short circuit, in the Lafayette district for the most part. "The founder is at the corner of the street, the setter a little higher, and the stones generally I go to look for them in the marsh", he specifies.

At the bottom of the apartment, we find the painter's studio. Among the various works, there are representations of illuminated streets or fireworks. The canvas in progress features the Saint-Martin canal at night. “In these very dark environments in Paris, there is always a little dawn in the distance. It's often the street lamps”, explains Pierre Rioufol, who adds about his favorite inspirations “What I like is painting very deep landscapes in a blurry style”. For the artist, who, among all his activities, gives a great place to painting, the interest of the practice lies in the personal touch that can be added to the final result. “Contrary to the photo which catches an image, here we can compose it”, he concludes.

For the weeks to come, Pierre Rioufol will however have to think about putting away his brushes for the benefit of another of his great passions: music. On April 1, he released with Poudre noire (duo he formed with Antoine Clément Bollée) his first album “LE CANON”, which he intends to bring to life on stage throughout the summer. Case to follow.
