Salome Lagresle

On March 10, the 3rd Pegasus ceremony will take place live from La Cigale. Salomé Lagresle, host of this major event for the video game industry, tells us about the evolution and trends in the sector.

She is the face of the Pegasus. The animator specializing in video games will host for the 3rd consecutive year the Pegasus ceremony, which rewards the best French and international video game productions. For this new edition, it will welcome distinguished guests from the profession and pop culture. Many surprises will punctuate this evening dedicated to those who make video games shine in the world.

You are going to host the 3rd Pegasus ceremony. What does this represent for you?

It is a very good opportunity. I am very proud to be the spokesperson for the sector and to be able to highlight French know-how in video games. It puts me in the front row of a great event and also gives me the opportunity to see a lot of people from the industry again, at a time when we are a little disconnected from each other because of successive confinements.
And then, it's a great honor because we are not many women to evolve in this industry. I know that today there is a real desire to move towards more diversity. In this context, choosing a woman to host this ceremony is a nice message.

Is it complicated, as a woman, to evolve in this universe qualified as “masculine”?

This is a question I am often asked. I think that in the current media landscape – whatever the medium: video games, music, politics, etc. – we still see too few women in leadership positions. But for me, I never really felt that I had to work harder, or do more. However, I may have suffered more attacks on the internet and social networks. But I managed to detach myself from these criticisms.

You've been working in this environment for 10 years, but how did you get into gaming?

Simply by playing. It quickly became a passion. Alongside my studies, I had the opportunity to work for a TV channel that no longer exists today. In the same building were housed the premises of a large video game site, Gameblog, which is currently in liquidation. They were the ones who gave me my first opportunities. I also had a blog. By force of circumstance, I became professional and started presenting TV shows related to video games. I'm lucky, because this environment has always appealed to me a lot, and has offered me great professional opportunities.

“Inclusion and representation of minorities are strong trends in video games”

As an animator, you see a lot of new games coming through. What are the current trends in this sector?

There really are a lot. For example, this year the Pégases are offering a new category: “the prize for Best Accessibility” which rewards a game for the efforts made from its conception to make it accessible to all. At the moment, the studios are making a big effort on this subject. For example, Microsoft has created a special, more inclusive controller The industry is sending a strong message to all people who do not always have easy access to video games due to their disability. I think it's great that this entertainment can be extended to everyone.
The inclusion and representation of minorities are also strong trends. There are now non-gendered characters, of colors, non-sexualized female heroines of games...

The third trend I see is the use of video games to raise awareness for great causes. For example, Minecraft makes it possible to highlight ecological initiatives. Recently, Havas Sport & Entertainment developed the “Undercover Avatar” for the Association Enfant Bleu. This blue bird avatar talks to players to detect victims of in-game abuse Fortnite. These examples demonstrate that the medium is evolving. This goes in the direction of the ennoblement of this entertainment, which passes in the minds of a hobby for geeks to a real platform allowing great causes to get their message across intelligently.

Do you have a favorite game to share with us?

I would say S.unknown oldats: Memoirs of the Great War. It's not recent, but this game from Ubisoft allows you to embody the protagonists of the First World War. Very intelligent, well done, it is both educational without being boring. Otherwise, I'm thinking of another multi-award-winning nugget made in France: At Tale Beach , from the Bordeaux studio Asobo. The 2nd installment, Requiem, due out this year. We find in this game music by French composers and orchestral arrangements. It's nice to see talented French studios releasing major games offering totally different experiences from what we usually see on the market.

To come back to the 2022 Pegasus, should we expect any surprises for this ceremony?

Full. We are lucky in France, in addition to having talented video game creators, to have equally talented content creators. The program therefore promises to be very rich.
We called on a few well-known people from the gaming community. For example, Davy Mourier (note: screenwriter, designer, colorist, etc.) will be present to sketch the ceremony live, and his drawings will be displayed on the big screen of the La Cigale stage. We are also preparing a musical surprise. And for the rest, you will have to follow the event live!

And finally, do you have a prognosis to share with us?

Not really ! But as a Lyonnaise, I am very proud to see Arkane studios named with Deathloop, a game that made it into the 2021 edition of The Game Awards (editor’s note: the “Oscars” of video games], and hailed by the press upon its release
